Why Service and Maintain Your Filter System
To ensure your water filter system provides you with pristine water, it requires regular servicing and maintenance. This will help safeguard against:
- Poor water flow due to a build-up of sediment
- Bad tasting water
- A breeding ground for bacteria
For most people, the sole reason for having a water filter system installed is to improve the quality of their water. Whether that be to improve taste, remove bad smells, remove chlorine or other chemicals, or to stop staining in household ceramics.
Servicing & Maintenance
Visual inspections of your system should be carried out regularly. Servicing and maintenance should be conducted every 6 to 12-months, but this can be dependent on the quality of the water source. Some water supplies are heavy in sediment or organic material. Or, have unwanted chemicals, metals, or minerals. The harder the filter must work, the more frequently it needs to be changed.
Homes that are supplied by rainfall collected off rooftops will typically require filter replacements every 12-months. If operating an Ultraviolet system to kill bacteria, lamps typically have 9,000 hours of lamp life (again, 12-months), so should be changed annually to ensure they maintain their effectiveness.
At Pristine Water Systems, we pride ourselves in the quality of our work. Servicing a filter unit is more than just replacing the filters. The following is what is involved in servicing a water filtration unit:
- Clean and sanitise filter housings
- Replace water cartridges
- Replace o-rings to ensure water seals are maintained
- Replace lamps (for Ultraviolet units)
- Clean Quartz Thimble / Sleeve or (replace if damaged, brittle or fouling is significant)
- Test and ensure system is fully operating effectively.

Water Filter Lifespans
There are many various filters available on the market. The quality of water filters can vary and have different purposes in ensuring your water is suitable for drinking. Following are the key elements you need to consider for what filter best suits your needs:
- Type of filter
- Sediment – to remove organic debris
- Carbon – to remove chemicals such as chlorine, pesticides and herbicides
- Ceramic – to remove dirt and debris, chlorine, poor taste, odour and cysts
- Reverse Osmosis systems – remove fluoride, chlorine, heavy metals, cysts, turbidity, sediment, colloidal matter, toxic metals, herbicides and pesticides.
- The ‘Micron’ filtration level. A Micron is a unit of measurement in size. A micron is the same as a millionth of a meter, or 1/1000 of a millimetre. Bacteria ranges from 0.4 to 2.0 microns in size. Therefore, the smaller the micron level of the filter, the more likely it will remove sediment and bacteria from the water
